Real Options for City Kids, or R.O.C.K. for short, is a grassroots, nonprofit youth development organization located in the heart of San Francisco's Visitacion Valley. R.O.C.K. offers sports and fitness, community service, learning enrichment, leadership training and outdoor adventure programs for girls and boys ages 6 - 17 that live or attend school in Visitacion Valley. R.O.C.K. provides thousands of hours of youth development programming each year to over 500 children. The mission of R.O.C.K. is nurture the healthy development of children by listening attentively to their needs and by providing opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access. When she was eight years old, Monique begin attending Skill Drills, R.O.C.K.'s Saturday program focusing on team-based sports in a fun, noncompetitve environment. Growing up in a challenging environment, R.O.C.K. became her second family, one that provided hope in her life. Throughout her entire childhood, Monique stayed involved with the organization as a participant and volunteer. Eventually, she went on to attend college at St Marys where she graduated with a degree in Kinesiology. Today, Monique works as a staff member for R.O.C.K. where one of her responsibilities is running Skill Drills.
